Chiaverano: beauty at the foot of the Alps

Updated: Nov 12

The ancient origins of Chiaverano

Chiaverano, a small village located in the heart of Piedmont, close to the Ivrea Morainic Amphitheatre, boasts ancient roots dating back to Roman times. The village developed more during the Middle Ages, when its strategic position made it an important centre in the area, especially for trade and agriculture.

Today, Chiaverano is a village that retains the charm of the past, with its cobbled streets and stone buildings, surrounded by lush, unspoilt nature.

A historical and natural heritage to explore

Chiaverano is surrounded by a spectacular natural landscape, with forests, hills and lakes stretching to the foothills of the Alps. One of the symbols of the village is the 11th-century ‘Chiesa di Santo Stefano’, which dominates the valley with its Romanesque architecture. Walking through the village streets, one can discover medieval houses, small courtyards and breathtaking views of the surrounding nature.

Responsible tourism and immersion in nature

Chiaverano offers visitors numerous opportunities to experience the area in a responsible and sustainable manner. The numerous paths that cross the territory offer splendid excursions on foot or by bicycle, leading to the discovery of age-old woods, flowering meadows and small lakes, such as ‘Lago Sirio’, a natural gem perfect for a relaxing day or a picnic immersed in tranquillity. This area, part of the Cinque Laghi Natural Park, is ideal for those who love nature and slow tourism.

The flavours of Chiaverano

The cuisine of Chiaverano reflects Piedmontese culinary traditions, with simple dishes that are rich in authentic flavours. The village is known for the production of goat's cheese ‘honey’ and chestnuts, which form the basis of many local dishes. Also not to be missed are the wines produced in the surrounding hills, in particular the Canavese DOC, which perfectly accompanies traditional local dishes such as bagna cauda (warm oil, garlic and anchovy-based dipping sauce) and braised beef in red wine.

Events and traditions

Chiaverano is a lively community that celebrates its traditions with numerous events throughout the year. Prominent among these is the ‘Festa delle Erbette’ (Herb Festival) held in spring and celebrating the products of the land, particularly the wild herbs used in the local cuisine. Another popular event is the ‘Palio di San Lorenzo’, a historical re-enactment that takes place every August, during which the various districts of the village compete in traditional games, re-enacting ancient traditions.

The best time to visit

Chiaverano is an ideal destination to visit all year round, but the spring and autumn months are particularly suitable for enjoying the colours of nature and outdoor activities. Spring, with its flowers and the rebirth of vegetation, is perfect for excursions, while autumn offers spectacular landscapes with its warm shades and the chestnut harvest, one of the most heartfelt local traditions.

A welcoming community

Besides its natural beauty and historical heritage, what makes Chiaverano a special place is the hospitality of its community. The villagers are proud of their traditions and ready to welcome visitors, offering an authentic and warm experience. Walking through the streets of Chiaverano means meeting people who still live in close contact with nature and who gladly share their way of life, made up of respect for the land and ancient traditions.
